The Velvet Gentleman

How does one display an object that has lost its materiality? This exhibition proposal essay plays on the concept of lack and contextual signifiers as the method of display for a departed garment. The exhibition seeks to animate the seven velvet corduroy suits that once belonged to Erik Satie through meditations on loss, choosing not to recreate but to instead display what once was through use of music. The relationship between each of the suits and Satie’s enigmatic composition Vexations play on the concept of replication, finding the beauty in each imperfect repetition rather than the recreation of an idealised image.
